In 1915, City Hall and the Tampa Police Headquarters were constructed on Florida Avenue between Jackson Street and Lafayette (now Kennedy Boulevard) downtown. The three-story brick and cut-stone police building was considered one of the best in the country at the time. It housed a force of sixty-five officers and a jail. 1996 returned to central downtown with the purchase of the Former SunTrust Bank at 411 Franklin Street. In the early 1960s, a new police station was built on Tampa Street, and the department moved. In 1996, it returned to central downtown with the purchase of the former SunTrust Bank at 411 Franklin Street. A parking lot for city hall and the Tampa Municipal Building, seen on the left in the photo, is now on the corner.
