College Hill was developed in the late 1800s as one of several additions to Ybor City. This photo shows businesses at 3513 22nd Street, the Paradise Bar, Lee’s Pool and Billiard Hall, the College Hill Pharmacy, and the Kitchen Supply Grocery and Market. The Paradise Bar was a place for locals to congregate. It had booths along the wall with a jukebox on the bar in the back.

There were many news reports of criminal activity at the Paradise. So much so that City Councilman Perry Harvey, who in 1983 owned a pharmacy a block away, pushed to have the zoning for alcohol reclassified after the state had already suspended the bar’s license. The state revoked it after being deemed a crime-ridden establishment. In 1987, the Police Athletic League rented the building and opened a gym for area youth. Boost Mobile and the 22nd Grocery and Meat store now make up the strip center.
