The northeast corner of Broadway (now 7th Ave) and 22nd St. housed Broadway Pharmacy and Gilman’s Dry Goods store at 2202-04 Broadway in 1926 when this shot was taken.  They took over the spot around 1925 when Senour Hardware moved out. The property was several blocks east of the central retail district and the rent was less expensive. East on Broadway, next to Gillman’s was the G.N. Alchediak grocery store at 2208 7th Ave. Alchediak had another store on Lafayette St. To the north, behind Broadway Pharmacy on 22nd street in the photo, stood a barbershop.

After 14 years in business in 1938, the Broadway’s owner put the location up for sale and moved to 119 W Columbus Dr. In the early 1960s, Florida Drug Store was located here. The property was allegedly tied to Santo Trafficante Jr., a suspected Tampa Mafia kingpin, and two of his brothers. U.S. Federal Marshalls moved to sell Trafficante’s interest in 1969 to satisfy federal tax liens.  The sale was canceled at the last minute, and the file was “lost” and not brought up again until 1981 when U.S. Attorney General Gary Betz filed another federal lawsuit for lien settlement. Shrimp and Co. opened its seafood shop in 2009, and Snobachi’s Ice Cream Shop opened in 2017. Mai’s Hair Braiding Salon is where the barbershop used to be.
